Overview

Sri Lanka's Blue Whale Capital

Mirissa is a small fishing village on Sri Lanka's south coast that has become one of the most celebrated beach destinations in Asia - and one of the best places on earth to encounter blue whales. The village wraps around a beautiful crescent bay, backed by coconut palms and small hills, with the iconic Parrot Rock outcrop marking the eastern end of the beach.

The waters off Mirissa and Dondra Point (the southernmost tip of Sri Lanka) sit at the confluence of ocean currents that create ideal conditions for large cetaceans. Blue whales - the largest animals ever to have lived on Earth - migrate through these waters between November and April, often seen within just a few kilometres of shore. Sperm whales, Bryde's whales, killer whales, and several species of dolphin including spinner and bottlenose are also regularly encountered.

Beyond whale watching, Mirissa offers some of Sri Lanka's finest beach life: calm turquoise waters ideal for swimming and snorkelling, a laid-back cafe culture on the beach, excellent surfing conditions from October to April, and spectacular sunsets from Coconut Hill. The town has evolved from a backpacker hideout into a destination with high-quality accommodation and restaurants, yet has retained its relaxed, unhurried character.

Things to Do in Mirissa

From ocean adventures to golden sunsets, Mirissa offers an extraordinary range of experiences for every traveller.

Blue Whale Watching

Departing at 6:30 AM, whale watching boats head to the deep waters off Dondra Point. Blue whales - up to 30 metres long - are regularly sighted surfacing just metres from the boat. A genuinely life-changing experience.

Mirissa Beach

The main crescent beach is lined with palm trees and beach restaurants. The eastern end is calmer and ideal for swimming, while the western end has a gentle surf break. The whole beach glows amber and gold at sunset.

Secret Beach

A short walk over the headland from Parrot Rock reveals a secluded cove with crystal-clear water and almost no other people. Perfect for swimming, cliff jumping, and snorkelling among colourful reef fish.

Coconut Hill Sunset

Climb the small hill above the western end of Mirissa beach for the most spectacular sunset view on the south coast. A natural platform of coconut palms framing the Indian Ocean horizon - pure magic at dusk.

Snorkelling & Diving

Vibrant coral reefs, sea turtles, and tropical fish await just offshore. Several operators offer guided snorkelling trips to the best spots, and night diving with bioluminescent plankton is an otherworldly experience.

Surfing at Weligama

15 minutes from Mirissa, Weligama Bay has the longest, most consistent gentle waves in Sri Lanka - making it the island's premier learn-to-surf destination. Lessons available directly on the beach.

Sea Turtle Watching

Several beaches near Mirissa are nesting sites for five species of sea turtle, including the giant leatherback. Turtle hatcheries at Koggala and Rekawa offer ethical nighttime watching experiences during nesting season.

Fresh Seafood Dining

The fishing boats you see offshore each morning supply the beach restaurants that evening. Grilled lobster, prawn curry, and freshly caught tuna are staples. Dining with your feet in the sand as the sun sets is quintessential Mirissa.

Mirissa Fishing Harbour

Visit the working harbour at dawn to watch the fishing fleet return and the lively fish auction that follows. The contrast between the traditional stilt fishermen and the whale watching boats tells Sri Lanka's south coast story beautifully.
